Enter RPM, flutes and feed — chip load updates instantly.
Formula
Chip load = feed rate / (RPM × Z) | feed = chip load × RPM × Z
Typical Chip Loads (mm/tooth)
| Tool Ø | Aluminum | Steel | Wood/MD F |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 mm | 0.03–0.05 | 0.02–0.03 | 0.10–0.15 |
| 6 mm | 0.06–0.10 | 0.04–0.06 | 0.20–0.30 |

FAQ
What happens if chip load is too low?
The tool rubs instead of cutting — heat builds up, work-hardens the surface and kills the cutting edge. "Squealing" cutters are usually rubbing.
Too high?
Chatter, broken endmills and poor finish. Increase stepover/depth or reduce feed.
